Anyone who has stayed at the Camping & Caravanning Club site at Lydford, and who used a GPS to navigate there, will have found very quickly that the GPS just WON'T take you down the A386 to Lydford, then turn right by the War Memorial in the centre of the village to go the 100 yards or so to the actual site. Why, oh why???
Anyway, tonight I thought of a way to overcome the problem with the mapping - when entering the club site as a POI, don't (on any account!) use the Postcode to specify the site location. Instead, click on the Show Map icon on the TomTom, and click the site location as being right on the corner of the main road into the village. Yes, I know it isn't the proper location of the site, but you CAN see the site from this position, and now my TomTom 920 will take me there the way I've been going to the site for the past couple of years, instead of directing me down obscure, and very narrow, back lanes barely wide enough for a small town car, let alone a 4x4 and a 7ft 2in wide caravan!
Just thought I'd let everyone know!!!
All the best,

| If it is a site you use a lot Bill you use itinerary and set waypoints to go the way you want to go and then save it then every time you go just use the itinerary you saved. |

This is a common problem with Sat Nav especially if you input quickest route
So it always pays to review the route before you follow it blindly
There are a couple of sites in Pavalas Les Flot that the SatNav rightly takes you down a certain route but doesn't realise there is a low bridge that caravans can not get under
Again one for checking out the route first
There are a few sites that I have altered similar to Bill to ensure correct routing for an outfit |

Why doesn't TomTom (or whoever) produce maps which give road widths? Given the number of reports on TV of lorries getting stuck in narrow country lanes, I would have thought that the mapping people could define road widths similar to those seen in most road atlases.
I'm not so sure about overhead bridge and tunnel heights - that would require a lot of work, though the results would be wonderful for GPS navigators with wide/tall vehicles.
Then there's road gradients - the Ordnance Survey show steep hills simply and easily, so towing vehicles (like me and my van) can avoid them. The work would be a little tedious, but again the results would be very helpful.
I'd be pleased to pay a bit more for REALLY USEFUL maps, rather than just definitions of where a road is.

Think everyone would agree with you there Bill. I know a lot of people who say they would happily buy a new SatNav if it was designed for towing and chose routs that would be more suitable.
Until that happens then we will just have to do as Gray says and preview the rout and make changes. |
