We have used a Satnav for some years now. The first was a very basic Etrex. It had no route planning or sound and you had to plan your route manually that said it did get us from A to B. We even used it when we cycled and camped going over the Peak District to Yorkshire.
Ok they can get you in trouble if you are towing and sometimes they don’t pick the best route but most of the time they do the job.
We like ours and even when going to visit family in Yorkshire we set the route as the trip is 90% motorway and once we missed our exit and had to travel a long way to get back.
So do you love them or hate them? |

Love 'em
When towing you just have to review your route carefully to make sure you plot a route that
Is the Fastest - shortest ones tend to get you into trouble
don't take you under low bridges
follow roads that are still there  (Val) |

Excuse me you two... just read your posts cheeky b.... rs.
And well... yes we did have to reverse at a low bridge in France in Ommer(spelling???) it was so busy I had to get out and stop the traffic it was awfull they dont move for you just keep moving forward and me waving my arms about like an idiot. We had afew wrong roads with the tom tom but must say they were all our own fault.Sometimes we think we know better than it lol or take a wrong turning and it takes you back through some pretty narrow streets lol all part of the fun  like straight onto the main street and oh!! no market day they had to move all the stuff to let us through and when we got to the other end of the street the only road we could have gone was dug up so back we went through the market funny no one smiled at us pmsl.

My missus has to hold the map upside down when we go south!!!!!
At least the sat nav doesn't have to do this!!!!!!
Love em - IF you realise their limitations and still do your research.
Hate em - IF you blindly follow them without checking the route first.
Follow this simple rule and you will love your sat nav forever! |

Well we have recently changed from a TT 710 to a nice new TT 920T and I have to say a nice piece of kit.
There are several things I like about this unit.
TTS (text to speech) this is excellent, you no longer get told “in 300 yards turn left” you now get “in 300 yards turn left ‘and the street name’ “ it also reads out road numbers, motorway numbers and junctions. OK some names do come out a bit odd but most times it is clear. With TTS you can now type in your own warnings for Poi’s have your text messages read out etc.
It has a nice large 4.3 inch screen.
It comes with a bluetooth remote that I did think would just end up in the glove box but no I actually do find it handy
.
Routing and re-routing are faster than my 710.
The maps are more up to date.
I have not used the handsfree as we have on in the car all the time anyway.
The inbuilt FM transmitter is not perfect but if you can tune into a nice clear channel then the mp3’s don’t sound bad and of course they are paused when you get directions. Plus you can use the remote for volume and to skip back or forwards.
Using speech recognition you can enter your destination and it works a lot of the time. Does come in handy some times like when asked if you want to re-calculate your route due to a traffic incident you can say Yes or No rather than tapping the screen or using the remote.
The ‘T’ in 920T is for the TMC receiver for getting the traffic info. This has been a big problem for TT here in the UK. Now they are on the MK III unit it is working in a lot of areas in the UK. The trouble is that in the last firmware update TT screwed it up. You do get the type of incident reported right and you do get the location reported right but the delay times are way out. They are looking at this and say it should be put right in the next firmware update.
Battery life is said to be around 4-5 hours. I have found that with Bluetooth and the FM transmitter on plus a bright screen then it is more like 2-2 ½ hours.
All in all very pleased and can not wait to put it to a real test. |
