As we tend to camp in far away places that don't always get to see many UK citizens it always pays to learn a little of the language.

You will find that trying to speak a little of the language gives you far more respect than trying to point and gesticulate what you want. In fact it canlead to freindship and even assistance to learn more as I found out quite a few years ago on the daily bread run in France. It started as a quick popin - straight out and developed to a full French breakfast (Free) with the shop owner him trying to speak English and me trying to speak French and correcting each other.

Odd you should post this as I was going to post about is it handy to speak the lingo. I am cr*p at learning a language (can not even cope with english properly lol) I do know that in Greece we got a different reception when we could at least say hello.

I am too long in the tooth to learn new languages, but do try to acquire at least the courtesy greetings.
A non-caravanner friend said once why don't you learn a language, my reply then was, which one, I travel all over europe ! . English I find is invariably understood in most places.

You're never too old to learn

plus it breaks the ice if you try to speak their language
silly mistakes make everyone laugh but then you get friendly help which is a lot more personal and rewarding
